Lower back pain and Chiropractic

Lower back pain is one of the most common conditions that cause people to consult a Chiropractor. In any given month it is estimated that about one third of people will experience some kind of back pain. About 80% of adults will have some type of back pain in their lives. The good new is that most episodes of back pain last less than three weeks. Episodes of pain lasting longer than one month are usually referred for MRI. It alos appears that younger persons with back pain in adolescence have a higher chance of having back pain as adults.
Even though back pain is a very common condition it is often very difficult to determine the exact cause of the pain even with advanced imagine procedures like MRI. Many parts of the lower back including the discs, facet joints, muscles and sacro-iliac joints can be the cause of pain. Usually only about 1% of people with back pain have compression of the nerve roots that results in conditions like weakness and numbness. It is estimated that about 40% of people with back pain have pain that is related to their disc. The facet joints which are small joints in the back that limit rotation are said to account for about a third of back pain complaints. The sacro-iliac joints are estimated to account for about 40% of lower back pain.
