Spondylolisthesis and Chiropractic

Spondylolisthesis means literally slipping vertebrae. It is a condition where the front and the back parts of the vertebrae do not fuse properly. Most types occur during adolescence and for no known reason. Some may be associated with strenous sports such as gymnastics. Most people with a spondylolisthesis do not know they have it. The condition is often made worse by extending the back or leaning back. The most often area to have a spondylolisthesis is the L5 vertebrae and the condition may be linked to lower back pain.
Spondylolisthesis is most often diagnosed by an x ray.
Most lower grade spondylolisthesis are stable and cause no problems. They are usually an incidental finding on x ray. Most often the condition does not get worse with age. Patients with lower back pain and spondylolisthesis may have Chiropractic treatments with good results. I have personally treated a patient with a very pronounced spondylolisthesis with very good results. Most all spondlylolisthesis are stable and even in car accidents or other traumatic events cause no additional problems.
