Neck Pain and Chiropractic

Neck pain is one of the most common conditions treated by Chiropractors. The neck acts to position the head in space to give the best appreciation of the surrounding environment. The great mobility of the neck creates a situation in which the structures of the neck may be injured in the extremes of motion. Additionally the neck may be subject to more insidious stress in the form of forward head position such as in reading or office work. The forward head position creates very high demands on the muscles of the back of the neck and may result in neck pain, muscle tightness and headaches. One of the best ways to combat the effects of forward head posture is to engage in an exercise program for the neck that includes neck extensions. Neck extensions may be done either on a neck extension machine at the gym or on an exercise ball at home. Both can be very effective.
Problems with the upper neck may result in such complaints as headaches, facial pain and ear pain. Pain and problems in the arm may also be related to the neck. Neck problems may cause or add to arm pain, numbness, tingling and weakness of the arm. Many people with such complaints of weakness/pain/ numbness of the arm are able to get relief with Chiropractic care. The mechanism of relief is often unclear but appears to be referred pain from the joints of the neck. One study proposed that the joints of the neck account for most neck pain and arm pain. The joints referred to were the facet joints which as relatively small joints in the back of the spine.
