History of Chiropractic

The practice of Chiropractic originated in the US in 1895 in Davenport, Iowa.
As far back as 2000 BC art has depicted using Chiropractic style adjustments with the hands to treat various conditions. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, described a form of manipulation in which the patient was stretched from each end and a hand force was applied to the bones of the spine. The physician Galen also used spinal manipulation for various spinal conditions. In the middle ages the practice of pharmacology and surgery became more prevalent and manipulation took a backseat.
The 19th century saw a revival of spinal manipulation in the form of bonesetting. Bonesetters were doing many adjustments similar to the Chiropractors of today. The knowledge and tradition of bonesetting was largely passed from person to person and no formal instruction was available.
The late 1800s saw the founding of both Chiropractic and Osteopathy. Both disciplines focused initially on the manipulation of the joints of the body. Osteopathy used more long lever, nonspecific manipulations. Chiropractic employed more short level adjustments to vertebrae using specific contacts on the vertebrae.
The profession of Chiropractic was founded or discovered by DD Palmer in 1895. Palmer founded the first ever college of Chiropractic in 1896 in Davenport, Iowa. The college founded by DD Palmer is still in operation today in almost the same location as in 1895.
The first ever Chiropractic adjustment was reportedly performed on a deaf person and resulted in immediate onset of hearing. The story is of course very hard to verify but is part of Chiropractic history. The practice of Chiropractic has undergone many charges in the last 100 plus years and many new Chiropractic techniques have been added. The most influential developer of the Chiropractic profession was BJ Palmer. BJ Palmer was very influential in Chiropractic from the 1920s to 1950s. BJ Palmer was colorful to the extreme and is one of the most revered characters in Chiropractic history.
