Shoulder Pain, The Biceps and Chiropractic

Shoulder pain is one of the most common complaints seen in the Chiropractic office. Often working overhead and throwing motions are activities that contribute to shoulder pain. Often shoulder impingement is called bursitis. The condition is caused by thickening and irritation of the tendons of the rotator cuff. Biceps tendinitis is another very common cause of shoulder pain that is often difficult to differentiate from conditions involving the rotator cuff. Usually the pain of biceps tendonitis is felt more at the front of the shoulder and the pain of rotator cuff bursistis is felt more at the top of the shoulder.
The are several motions of the shoulder that tend to aggrevate biceps tendinitis. One is the throwing motion. Another is raising the arm to the front or pushing motions such as while using a vacuum cleaner. Another motion that tends to aggrevate the biceps tendon is turning the arm outward while raising the arm. Irritations to the rotator cuff usually do not become painful while turning the arm outward while raising the arm. For this reason biceps tendonitis is more common in persons who do throwing sports or paddling.
If left untreated biceps tendonitis may result into complete adherence of the tendon. The result is a greatly reduced range of motion of the shoulder which may result in rupture of the biceps tendon.
The most helpful Chiropractic technique in dealing with biceps tendonitis is myofascial release. Most cases seem to require 4-7 treatments over several weeks to gain some kind of relief. Ice and rest from the aggrevating activity are often helpful as well.
