The Knee-Sports and Chiropractic

The knee is one of the most commonly injured joints in the body. The unique design of the knee makes is susceptible to trauma from external forces. Chiropractic treatments are effective treatment for many conditions of the knee especially for overuse conditions including patellar tendinitis and IT band syndrome.
The knee is unique in that it relies on strong ligaments and muscles for stability. The main ligaments that control the knee are the medial and lateral collateral ligaments (MCL/LCL) and the anterior cruciate ligament and posterior cruciate ligament (ACL/PCL).
The quadriceps which are the large muscles at the front of the thigh are probably the most important muscles that protect the knee. One of the earliest signs of internal injury to the knee is atrophy or shrinking of the muscles of the quadriceps.
While the knee may appear as a simple hinge joint it is not. The tibia which is the large bone in the lower leg travels a curved path on the femur. The patella is highly moveable as well and slides in a groove in the femur. Patellar tendinitis and quadriceps tendinitis are commonly treated by Chiropractic methods including myofascial release. One of the most common conditions of the knee which may lead to arthritis in later life is injury to the meniscus.
One reason the knee can be difficult to treat is that it lacks the bony stability that protects most joints including the hip and ankle. The meniscus is a small soft tissue pad located on the interior of the knee joint that acts to limit certain motions of the knee and increase stability. Injury to the meniscus is known to cause pain on the middle joint line of the knee and may also click. Meniscus injuries often take place when the knee is twisted while bent.
