Lower back pain and Chiropractic care

Lower back pain is probably the most common condition causing people to seek Chiropractic care. Back pain is often a somewhat mysterious condition that can come on suddenly without exact cause. Chiropractic care has been proven to be effective in both long and short term care of lower back pain. One study by UCLA found Chiropractic care more effective than medical care for lower back pain as based on patient satisfaction.
Many people think of lower back pain as primarily a condition that originates from the disc but other structures play an important role as well. It has been estimated that about 39% of persons suffering from lower back pain have disc involvement with about 5% having a disc herniation. Pain originating in the joints of the lower back (known as the facet joints) can account for up to 40% of back pain and pain from the sacro-iliac joint may account for up to 40% of back pain. The percentages overlap and the causes of lower back pain can be due to a combination at the same time of disc, facet and sacro-iliac joint.
The general recommendation for Chiropractic care for lower back pain is a course of treatment lasting 3-4 weeks. If a person is still suffering from significant lower back pain after 3-4 weeks of conservative care, including Chiropractic, further imagine including x ray or MRI may be needed.
